Summer School: Land Governance and Development

Land Governance and Development

Venue: Azim Premji University,
Bengaluru (Bangalore), India.
Dates: June 20-25, 2022

The Summer School on “Land Governance and Development” introduces participants to the development and policy debates centered around land. The course exposes participants to the contemporary challenges and opportunities at a time when Land has been increasingly figuring in the global and local development discourses and policy debates. Participants will learn about the multiple dimensions of and issues associated with land that are critical to achieving sustainable and inclusive development. The importance of land is acknowledged with concerns of land rights figuring prominently in some of the targets and indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while Net-Zero and NDC targets would envisage substantive land use changes affecting local tenure regimes. It is now increasingly recognized that for more inclusive urban and rural developments, formalization of land titling or improving land records are critical. So as rebooting green revolutions and inclusive agricultural transformation with women and tenants land rights or for that matter acknowledging and furthering the rights of indigenous communities for more effective conservation, carbon sequestration and ecosystem services. For resilient and effective urbanization and industrial development, the imperative of land-responsible investment, that promotes fair compensation and just resettlement respecting local and informal tenure is the new reality.
